How is syphilis contracted?

Expert Answers (1)

A condom is a good preventative measure for syphilis

Syphilis sores can often times be difficult to spot because they can be located in the vagina, rectum, or mouth. Syphilis cannot not be diagnosed simply by observing with the naked eye. Only laboratory tests can confirm whether or not someone has syphilis. Using a latex condom during sex significantly lowers a person's risk of contracting syphilis. Syphilis cannot be prevented by washing the genitals, urinating, or douching after sex.
