Infertility tests and diagnosis for men
Diagnosis of infertility begins with a detailed history and physical examination of both the male and female. Detailed questions will be asked about your sexual practices, medical history, previous fertility, medications, caffeine intake, and the amount of street drugs or alcohol consumption.
Lab tests for infertility
For men, a semen analysis will determine the sperm quantity and quality. Men should not ejaculate for 2 to 5 days prior to a semen analysis. A blood test may also determine the level of testosterone, gonadotropins, or pituitary hormones.
Hormone analysis for male infertility:
- Elevated FSH with low testosterone suggests primary hypogonadism
- Low FSH with low testosterone suggests secondary hypogonadism
- Prolactin levels are evaluated for hyperprolactinemia
Infertility tests for men with low ejaculate volume:
- Urinalysis to determine if sperm is in the urine
- Ultrasound to determine retrograde ejaculation or obstruction
