In Vitro Fertlization treatment for infertility

In Vitro Fertilization treatment for infertlity

IVF consists of medically stimulating the ovaries to develop multiple eggs and fertilizing them in the laboratory with sperm. One or two embryos are then transferred into the uterus. Usually, several attempts at IVF treatment are often required before pregnancy occurs.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an option for women with blocked or scarred fallopian tubes. IVF is also used for a number of other infertility causes, such as endometriosis, cervical disorders, unexplained infertility, and ovulation disorders. IVF is also an option for men with severe male factor infertility, including low sperm counts or low sperm motility.

The steps of in vitro fertilization include:

  • Ovarian hyperstimulation to recruit 8+ oocytes
  • Aspiration or removal of the oocytes
  • Preparation of the semen sample. Some men with severe male factor infertility may require a procedure called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
  • Fertilization and incubation of embryos
  • Transfer of one or more embryos into the uterus
