How to reduce the risk of getting ovarian cancer?

Some factors can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer:

  • Oral contraception. Women who have taken birth control pills that contain estrogen and progestin for over 5 years have a lower rate of ovarian cancer.
  • Pregnancy. Women who have given birth to children have a lower rate of ovarian cancer.
  • Healthy diet and weight. Diets high in fiber, vitamins is associated with lower rates of ovarian cancer. There is a higher risk of cancer in overweight or obese women.
  • Oophorectomy, hysterectomy, or tubal ligation surgery. Women who have been screened positive for high risk genetic factors (women with BRCA1, BRCA2, HNPCC gene mutations) may consider these surgeries, which reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by 50 to 90%.
