How to manage hives
Managing Hives
Hives are often very itchy and treatments are used to reduce skin inflammation and itching. Most cases of hives typically disappear without treatment within 24 hours. Exposure to known factors that cause hives should be minimized.
Oral antihistamines – oral antihistamines help reduce itching by blocking the release of histamine, a chemical that triggers an inflammatory response in skin. There are several classes of antihistamines, some which reduce drowsiness side effects. Combinations of antihistamines may be effective in some patients who do not respond to single antihistamines. Pregnant women should avoid using antihistamines, especially in the first trimester.
Oral corticosteroids –used as an alternative therapy when antihistamines do not work. Oral steroids for hives should be used only for short durations due to possible side effects.
