HPV is usually transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact most often during penetrative genital contact (vaginal or anal sex). Other types of genital contact in the absence of penetration, such as oral sex, can also lead to HPV infection, but those routs of transmission are much less common than sexual intercourse.
