What is the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2?
HSV-1 Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV-1) is the strain of herpes which usually causes cold sores (blisters) to develop around the mouth (lips, inside the mouth or face). Children are very susceptible to cold sore outbreaks while most people by the time they reach adulthood have developed antibodies in their body to fight this type of Herpes.
HSV-2 Herpes Simplex Type 2 (HSV-2) is the strain of herpes which usually causes herpes to develop around the genital region. Genital herpes is contracted through sexual contact with an infected partner. The symptoms of Genital Herpes includes:
- Sores or blisters in the genital area
- Tingling or burning sensation in the genital area.
However, both strains of herpes can affect either the oral or genital regions. For example HSV-1 can develop in the genital area. This is less common, and the recurrent outbreaks are usually less severe.
