Diagnosing bacterial vaginosis
Diagnosising bacterial vaginosis
A physical examination is often an unreliable method of diagnosis because most women with bacterial vaginosis are asymptomatic. Laboratory testing is the most reliable way to confirm diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. Testing can involve the taking a swab sample for microscopic evaluation of vaginal cells as well as measuring the pH of vaginal fluid.
Amsel criteria for diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis:
- Vaginal pH > 4.5
- Presence of “clue” cells (normal cells covered by bacteria)
- Clear, white or yellow colored vaginal discharge
- Fishy odor after adding 10% KOH
OSOM BVBlue is a 10-minute diagnostic test that involves a swab sample taken from the vagina.
