Pregnancy and Bacterial Vaginosis
The risk of pregnancy complications with bacterial vaginosis infection is well documented. However, research results are mixed as to whether all pregnant women with bacterial vaginosis can benefit from treatment. The CDC still advises that all pregnant women with symptoms be screened and treated. The CDC also recommends screening women who have had a previous preterm labor.
Oral medication of metronidazole or clindamycin is recommended for pregnant women. Intra-vaginal gel or cream treatment is not recommended for pregnant women. Women should be examined again after 1 month to confirm successful treatment.
