Treatments for scalp psoriasis

Tags: Skin , Psoriasis

The scalp is a common area affected by psoriasis. Patches of scalp often becomes itchy and forms scaly skin that easily flakes off. The most effective treatment for scalp psoriasis is topical steroid cream. Topical steroid foam or spray may be easier to apply on the scalp. Other treatments for scalp psoriasis include vitamin D (calcipotriol), salicylic acid, and tazarotene topical creams. However, long-term use (over 4 weeks) of steroid cream can damage skin and it is recommended to use the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time.

The best therapy for scalp psoriasis may include a combination of topical creams. For example, topical corticosteroid cream applied with salicylic acid or vitamin D may be a more effective therapy than corticosteroids alone. However, vitamin D and salicylic acid should not be used together. Patients should always consult with an experienced professional when combining scalp psoriasis treatments.
