Some lotions and creams may be prescribed to help lighten skin that has been darkened by Acanthosis nigricans.
Retinoids have been successfully used to treat Acanthosis nigricans. A combination therapy with 0.05% topical tretinoin and 12% ammonium lactate has been demonstrated to successfully treating obesity-associated Acanthosis nigricans as well. Other topical agents that may be used include podophyllin, fish oil, urea, and salicylic acid.
A promising new treatment for non specific Acanthosis nigricans is long-pulsed alexandrite laser treatment. Laser therapy can be applied to larger surface areas of the body. Near-complete resolution can be achieved after 5 treatment sessions; patients can remain lesion-free for 2 years.
